Top 10 Kitchen Tools We Love!

February 9, 2020 by L.L. Barkat Leave a Comment

The vegetarian kitchen is a lively one. So many colors. So many spices. So many ways to slice and dice and sizzle and bake. For such a lively kitchen, these are the top 10 kitchen tools we love. (If you can’t run right out and buy some of the more expensive tools, we suggest adding them to your Amazon wish list! šŸ™‚ )

1. Cast-iron skillet

Cast Iron Skillet
We use this skillet every single day, whether cooking an omelette or making what we call 5-star broccoli (broccoli made in a way that forever transformed our view of the vegetable). A bonus: the skillet adds a bit of iron to your vegetarian fare.

2. Cuisinart pressure cooker

Cuisinart Pressure Cooker
We’re on our second one of these. The first lasted for ten years. It’s a must for otherwise long-cooking dry legumes like chickpeas. But we also have taken to making barley in it. (36 minutes, and you’re good to go.)

3. Vita-Mix Pro blender 500

Vita-Mix Pro 500 Blender
Super strong. Never overheats. And we even grind our own flour in it, without the addition of any special attachments. (Just whiz and go!). We received this one as a gift and have never looked back.

4. Henckels knives

Henkels Knives Four Star Chef Set
We have tried so many different kinds of knives, even different kinds of Henckels, and we still love these best. They’re the perfect fit and the perfect weight. And they make all of our slicing and dicing a pleasure instead of a chore. (Especially welcome when it comes time to deal with onions! šŸ™‚ ) These knives do not dull easily, and this is actually important for safety. A dull knife requires undue pressure, so you’re more likely to slip up when your knife is dull.

5. Williams Sonoma dough cutter & counter cleaner

Williams sonoma olivewood bench scraper
This was a Christmas gift, because one of us noticed that the pie maker in the family was always struggling to get the pie dough neatly into the pie pans at Thanksgiving time. The tool easily lifts the dough from the counter, cuts the dough in the first place (needful, because we make four pies for the holiday and need to divide the big bowl of dough evenly), and is even useful after the pies are in the oven, because you can use it to scrape the extra dough and flour from the counter surface!

6. Bamix professional immersion blender

Bamix Professional Immersion Blender
This was also a gift. (Do you detect a trend?) It helps make the perfect smooth soups. Like this amazingly creamy pumpkin soup. Yum, yum, yum.

7. Wooden spoons

Wooden Spoons
The humble wooden spoon helps us stir everything from millet porridge to Indian chickpeas. We also own a bamboo spoon, but we admit that the wooden spoons are still our favorites.

8. Bamboo cutting boards

Bamboo Cutting Boards
Speaking of bamboo, these cutting boards make us happy, too! They don’t have quite as much give as wooden cutting boards, but they clean really easily.

9. Wooden rolling pin

Wooden Rolling Pin
Sure, you can get a marble rolling pin. But we love our wooden one (ours used to belong to Grandma). It’s light enough for kids to use, too. (Those marble ones. Wow. So heavy!)

10. Swing-Away can opener

Swing A-Way Best Can Opener
Next to the wooden spoons, this might be the humblest tool in our kitchen. It’s amazing how much a simple tool can make you happy. This one is smooth and strong. Stays on the can instead of popping off like many do. Requires very little hand strength to operate. Yay. šŸ™‚

Snapshots from work this month. I made a LOT of pa Snapshots from work this month. I made a LOT of paper snowflakes—which was good fun. I hadn’t tried my hand at them in years, but ended up making them for many kids. My favorite moment of snowflake-making was probably taking a request from two first grade boys, who turned to each other as I worked and said, genuinely impressed but in fake ā€˜let’s pretend we’re teenagers’ voices:
ā€œBROOOO are you seeing that??ā€
ā€œBro YES. How is she DOING that?ā€
They eventually decided to open a snowflake store, picking up my finished creation and saying ā€œlet’s sell this and say we made it!ā€ The most adorable scammers I’ve met šŸ˜‰

But speaking of things they *actually* made, 4th slide has some creations from an art table I ran when we had cardboard and the need for last-minute crafting. Not shown is an amazing 3-story-building-complex constructed by one previously-mentioned first grader.

Lastly, a gorgeous sunset, because we are often graced with some very lovely ones at the end of the day on the playground. Between that and the many flocks of birds, I think it’s quite a lovely place. šŸ™‚

Oh, and today we had a dance party! By the end I was very exhausted. It was lots of fun though—I always look forward to music and movement. Somewhere in the middle of that, I taught a young girl how to waltz. She took a break from cartwheels and asked me to teach her ballroom dancing—which I guess she assumed I knew. (Luckily I learned some steps at a historical museum as a kid and committed them to memory for princess reasons.) It was a funny contrast to the music accompanying us... which was, like, Uptown Funk and student-requested tracks such as music from Sonic the Hedgehog.

First project of the new year happened to be beadi First project of the new year happened to be beading some arm jewelry~ I’ve always thought these can be really beautiful. I was day-dreamily looking at photos of some online and decided to get out my bead box and try my hand at making one of my own. I ran out of silver chain, so I’ll need more in order to finish this piece (the design is done, but I need more material for attachment purposes, so it doesn’t flop every which way while being worn!) ✨I had a very lovely New Years (best friends and waffles, what more could you ask for ā˜ŗļø) but I can’t say I feel as reset in my mind as I often do. I’m tired and can’t say I know what to expect: but here’s to creating beautiful things, embracing kindness, and following inspiration wherever it leads us. #beading #armjewelry #chainjewelry #newyear #homemadejewelry #handmadejewelry

Hat 🌟 I’m really happy with how this turned o Hat 🌟 I’m really happy with how this turned out! I feel this is definitely the best hat I’ve made to date. I patterned it myself, and cut out my fabric + thick interfacing yesterday. Then this evening I sewed/assembled/decorated it all. It was a really fun project to do! 🧵With this done, all that’s left is to hem my skirt and alter the petticoat. The plan is 1950s-inspired witch. :) I’ve never done a super ā€œclassicā€ Halloween costume before, so I thought witch could be a fun idea to play with—especially with an old-fashioned twist. Maybe I can pretend I’m in my own black & white TV show ā˜ŗļø Looking forward to our cozy Halloween! We’re planning a little party for just ourselves, and the feel we’re going for is homey/classic/retro/quaint. She’s coming along šŸ™‚ ✨ *not on a proper dress She’s coming along :) ✨ *not on a proper dress form, ignore the lumps lol!* ~ Today I decided to try out my serger, to finish the raw edges. (That went mostly great, until it ran out of thread near the very end. After that I watched numerous videos but couldn’t get it working again. Might have given up after what felt like an hour of trying to fix it.) I also added my pockets (my precious!), sewed up the side seams, added a nice pocket edge stitch (so satisfying), and attached the waistband. (Twice. It needed basting, but second time it went on great.) I then added my button and button hole by hand. I’m hanging it overnight now and will do the hemming sometime in the next few days! In the meanwhile I have a petticoat to alter... and an accessory to make! #homesewing #halloweensewing #sewingproject #sewingprogress #fallsewing

I wanted an 8-panel circle skirt, and I’m loving how my design idea is shaping up so far. Today I started by adding an invisible zipper, then I went on to sewing the other panels into a ā€˜front’ and ā€˜back’, leaving the sides unattached for now so that I can add my pockets. 🧵#homesewing #halloweensewing #fallsewing #originaldesign #sewingproject #sewingprocess #patterning
